HUX

The scent led him farther up the mountain pass, teasing his nostrils to a greater and greater degree until at last he found himself standing before someone’s private getaway cabin and his sinuses stung with the otherworldly presence. Sharp and pungent. Recent.

New place, new people, same old story as the others.

These were young adults—college kids, Hux thought—at what he presumed to be their parents’ cabin. Every last one of them was dead, though if he had to guess, their suffering was not equal. As had been the case at the previous campground, here there were definite signs of a struggle. The front door of the cabin was torn down, as if hacked apart, and there was blood on the floor near the still-burning fireplace. The blood trailed across the cabin living area to the broken door, down the porch steps outside, and across the dirt where they were all gathered neatly on their knees. There were five of them—three men and two women. Beneath the grisly, self-inflicted gore of their peeled flesh, Hux noted a distinct wound made in one of the men’s upper chest—an axe strike to the collarbone.

Not all of them had gone willingly at first.

Following the scent farther still, Hux left them behind and trudged onward into the woods. He hiked for ten minutes until eventually he found his way out of the trees once more and was greeted by a large expanse of open, shimmering darkness. Lightning flashed in the low clouds and revealed it—a wide lake, in all its glittering enormity.

He began making his way around.
